Power outages are rarely predictable they can strike during a fierce storm, a grid failure, or even on a perfectly sunny day. That’s why it’s essential to prepare in advance, stocking up on key supplies that will help you and your family stay safe and comfortable until the lights come back on.
We spoke with Paul Riegel, Milwaukee County’s Emergency Management Division Director, to gather expert tips on what to have on hand. Let’s walk through the 17 must-have power outage supplies to keep your household ready for anything.
1. Flashlights

This one’s a no-brainer, but it’s worth emphasizing: a reliable flashlight is a power outage essential. Look for one that’s long-lasting and durable, like the Anker flashlight, which shines for up to 20 hours and is waterproof perfect for winter storms. Make sure every family member knows where to find a flashlight, just in case.
2. Water

When the power’s out, water access might become limited especially if you rely on a well pump. Keep at least a few gallons of water per person on hand. Smaller water bottles or jugs are great for shorter outages, but for longer events, stock up on larger containers.
3. Non-Perishable Food

Avoid opening your fridge or freezer during an outage to preserve the cold as long as possible. Instead, stock up on non-perishables like canned soups, granola bars, crackers, and dried fruits. You can even try out simple recipes that don’t require cooking.
4. Cooler

If the outage stretches on, a heavy-duty cooler (like a Yeti) can help you keep perishables and water cold. Remember: food should stay at or below 40°F to stay safe to eat.
5. First Aid Kit

A well-stocked first aid kit is a household necessity power outage or not. Check your kit every few months to replenish bandages, antiseptics, and medications. It’s also smart to store small essentials like extra batteries and matches here.
6. Headlamps

Flashlights are great, but a headlamp lets you work hands-free. A storm-proof model like Black Diamond’s headlamp is perfect for navigating your home or yard during a nighttime outage.
Paul’s Tip: If a storm caused the outage, be cautious when venturing outside. Steer clear of fallen power lines and watch for debris.
7. Weather Radio

When your phone dies or cell service cuts out, a weather radio can keep you updated. Look for a model with multiple power options, like batteries, solar charging, or a hand crank. The FosPower weather radio even doubles as a phone charger and flashlight.
8. Portable Phone Charger

A charged phone is your lifeline during an emergency. Keep a few portable chargers on hand, like INIU’s dual-pack, which works for both Android and Apple devices. Bonus: these chargers also have built-in flashlights!
9. Battery-Operated Lantern

For longer outages, a lantern provides steady, room-filling light. The Coleman lantern can shine for up to 14 hours and casts light up to 50 feet perfect for reading, playing games, or just hanging out.
10. Sleeping Bags

Winter outages can get dangerously cold. Insulated sleeping bags or heavy blankets will help you stay warm at night. Have everyone bundle up in one room to share body heat, and layer up with extra clothing.
Paul’s Tip: Keep extra blankets, sleeping bags, and cold-weather gear in your car, along with a shovel, salt, and sand.
