After years of speculation, fan campaigns, and development hurdles, Constantine 2 is finally happening. Director Francis Lawrence and star Keanu Reeves confirmed in a recent interview that the highly anticipated sequel has received official approval, marking a major step forward for the supernatural thriller.
The Long-Awaited Green Light
Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Lawrence revealed that Warner Bros. and DC Studios have given the green light for the project, despite the leadership transition to James Gunn and Peter Safran. While neither Gunn nor Safran has commented on the film’s status, it is expected to fall under the Elseworlds banner, which allows DC to develop standalone projects outside of their main cinematic universe.
We have finally gotten to the place where we now have the permission to go down that road, Lawrence shared. He also confirmed that Akiva Goldsman, who previously worked on the original Constantine (2005), is actively writing the script in collaboration with Reeves and himself.
This is the first substantial update since Warner Bros. initially announced the sequel in 2022, and while full production details remain under wraps, Lawrence’s comments suggest the team is making real progress.

Keanu Reeves has never hidden his love for John Constantine, and his persistence has played a crucial role in keeping the sequel alive. During the podcast, the actor expressed his deep connection to the character, stating, I’m aching to play this guy.
Lawrence also credited a 2021 interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where Reeves mentioned that Constantine was the one role he wanted to return to the most. That statement, combined with the unwavering support from fans, helped keep the idea of a sequel in the studio’s mind.

While Constantine received mixed reviews upon its release in 2005, it has since become a cult classic, with audiences appreciating Reeves unique take on the DC Comics antihero. The original film grossed $230.9 million worldwide, proving its long-term value despite initial skepticism.
Lawrence acknowledged that the fans played a huge role in keeping the sequel alive, explaining that their dedicated support and enthusiasm made it clear that there was still a strong demand for more of Reeves Constantine.
